What happens when an industry does a report to bolster its members and their understanding of the world around them?  Here is a very short snippet of a new report by an industry for its membership.  It deals with teens and how much technology is a part of their lives.  It is clear that the report was looking at how involved these young people are and will be in electronics and not on the impact it has on them and their families, that study is for someone else to do.  More...

Advocacy Campaign: When you go to the airport do you find it stressful?  After going through security you arrive at the gate, only to find that the flight is delayed.  You finally find a seat and what do you find?  You find CNN overhead, telling you all the things you don't want to hear before getting on a plane, and providing information your children should not be exposed to.  PLEASE go to our Programs section above and click on Screens A-Z (or click here) for sample letters asking airports and CNN parent company, Time Warner, to be a bit more understanding.  Let us know when you send your letters so we can help let our legislators know.

Center for SCREEN-TIME Awareness launches A Lifestyle for the 21st Century, a campaign to reduce screen-time and encourage real experiences with real people in real time.

Family Dinner Night: Have you picked your night?  Each one of us is picking a night, that cannot change.  Pick yours and after dinner, pull out a board game, a deck of cards or something else to do and make a night of it.

CSTA SPEAKER/TRAINING SESSIONS

If your organization, school, community college, departments of health or education, or business would like a training or speaker session leading up to TURNOFF WEEK 2009, please contact us now.

Sessions can include discussions on health, education, wellness plans, improved family life, fighting addictions, worker productivity, literacy improvements and best ways in combating the obesity crisis.

This is the best way to garner information on the impact electronic media has on your life, from the television to the safety of the internet and computer games to the PDA to the iPod.

Last year alone we visited over 60 cities across the USA, leading to upwards of 20 million people participating in TURNOFF Week.

Trainings and speaking engagements include materials on turnoff as well as a working session on how to make it work for you.

Interested groups or individuals can contact us at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it or by calling 202-333-9220.

The next book in the book club series is Robert Putnam's landmark book, BOWLING ALONE: THE COLLAPSE AND REVIVAL OF AMERICAN COMMUNITY

The book, one of the first, explored what happens to a society when communication and interaction is not a priority, when the solitary life (one filled with media) takes over, making us a little less human.

This is a classic, and even if you don't agree with everything Robert Putman has to say, it opens the door to amazing conversation.

Join us on December 9, 2008 (our last get together this year).  We have held these programs in the afternoon (Eastern time) and now look to all of you to suggest a time that works best.  This is a democratic process, so the time selected by the most people will become the official time for this discussion.

Please let me know what works best for you by emailing me at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .  I hope to hear from you soon.

The book club will move off the home page and have a section of its own, where  will highlight books related to our issues.  This will include books for adults, educators, health care professionals and children. Link in TakeAction/Programs Menu or Here .

We are now working on a brand new edition of our Organizer's Kit.  This will be the first version to include programs for Turnoff Week for the classroom, living room and workplace.

In addition to Turnoff Week activities and information, the new Org Kit will also offer tools for long-term screen-time reduction.  This is part of our effort leading to Wellness in America: from the Classroom to the Living Room to the Workplace.  The new campaign understands that if we are to make significant changes in our children's lives, we must make them in our lives as well.

Please let us know what you think by adding your comments to our Forum Pages.
